Dianne Bersea Invite card

This workshop assisted artists in using watercolour media to create dynamic, strong images onto the paper quickly and effectively by: making the most of watercolour's spontaneous qualities, identifying unexpected subject matter, simplifying the visual environment, considering unique compositional options.

In a vigorous atmosphere of demos and hands-on, participants created quick, loose sketches (en plein air if possible), in watercolour while planning for further development in the studio. Dianne demonstrated how to see more clearly and identify the elements that can be used to build strong watercolour images. From studies, and with Dianne’s guidance, participants created a series of smaller works to exploring composition, impact, energy flow and colour options. Each day concluded with a gallery and discussion of working progress.

Dominik Modlinski - Oil Painting Technique

Dominic Modlinski youtube video Click here to see a video of Dominik's work.

This workshop was for painters who wished to expand their knowledge of oil painting techniques while enhancing their perception and creative visualization. Dominik introduced colour exercises based on three primary colours and white to introduce students to colour mixing and achieving unlimited colour harmonies. He also expanded on several colour contrast principals, which are the basis for successful painting. He inspired creativity with his travel stories and slide presentations and dedicated time to demonstrating approaches to sketching and painting outside, where the aim is to capture the essence of the subject matter. Throughout the four days participants were encouraged to create a simultaneous dialogue between artistic creativity and environmental awakening.

In this three-day workshop, Gaye led students through the exciting yet sometimes overwhelming task of approaching painting the landscape from life. The workshop covered everything from consideration of design to the nuts and bolts of outdoor painting gear and how to create a set up that will works. Gaye worked in oils and soft pastel, but the workshop was not medium specific.

The approach covered in the workshop was representational i.e., rendering tones, colors, and atmosphere as they appear in nature, and capturing the fleeting effects of light in the shortest time possible. Gaye led participants in the process of working from life as a way to increase their painting skills.

Nicholas Pearce - Collaboration Workshop

This workshop was a collaboration between Nicholas Pearce and his students. Each student painted their own image using the techniques of gridding, large brush and canvas and limited palette that Nicholas Pearce teaches. This was an ideal supplementary workshop for those who had already experienced a class with Nicholas. It was also a great introduction to his teachings for those who hadn't yet had the privilege.

Participants worked on canvases around the 30"x40" size, and painted with a single, 1/2 inch sash brush using just four acrylic paint colours, plus white. It was a challenging, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable workshop for painters of all skill levels.

suzanne northcott workshop invite

In this course students worked with the instructor to articulate their own vision and particular challenges. Suzanne’s intention was to meet each individual exactly where they were and to support them in the production of work in the classroom that expanded their practice in a personal way.

The format focused heavily on individual instruction and included lecture and discussion components and some demonstration of particular techniques. Subjects addressed included awareness of surface quality, mixing media, mark making, composition, subject matter and some discussion around colour. Students were expected to provide their own subject material in the form of sketches, photos, physical items or ideas. Students were encouraged to take chances and reap the rewards. The creative fires were stoked and participants, inspired the beautiful environment, explored letting the boundaries between work and play become porous.
