Upcoming Workshops

September 24th, 25th & 26th, 2010

What inspires a photographer to become more aware? Whether your interest lies in photographing people, landscape or the abstract, in documentary or contemporary art photography, releasing your mind to the potential for exploration and experimentation and uncovering your personal vision will amplify your passion for photography.

As we develop a deeper visual awareness, our images become more personal and more meaningful.  Learning to be mindful strengthens our connection with our subject: whether it's a still life, a portrait, or a landscape, we become more passionate and better photographers.

During this workshop, we will explore beautiful Gabriola Island through daily photo assignments that will encourage participants to expand their ability to see and respond to their world. The workshop will encompass experiencing music, poetry and examining what it really means to see.

Within a supportive environment, the instructor will introduce notable and new photographers and their images to allow participants to gain a deeper understanding of how others see the world. There will also be cooperative group critiques of participants’ work each morning and, time permitting, a one-on-one portfolio review for each participant.

Photography matters now more than ever before, and as there are a thousand ways to skin a cat, the opportunities to explore the art of photography are as varied as the artist who picks up a camera. So whether you are an amateur or advanced photographer, come explore the aesthetic and emotional aspects of image making, and be inspired to make more powerful images.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This course is not concerned with the technical or the mechanics of camera use, the creative process of seeing and making an image is emphasized. However, participants must have a working knowledge of their cameras and students need to have a laptop with photo editing software, preferably Photoshop Elements, Photoshop or iPhoto and an understanding of digital workflow.

PORTFOLIO REQUIRED: A portfolio submission is required. Creating a portfolio will help you articulate your vision and provide a starting point for your growth. Your portfolio should contain 10 to 15 high-resolution digital images in jpeg or JPG format either as individual images, a PDF, or a disc in MAC format.

WORKSHOP: Friday Sept 24th, Saturday September 25th & Sunday September 26th, 2010 9am - 4pm.
PRICE: $325
Space is limited to 10 participants, so book early.

October 22nd, 23rd & 24th, 2010

Dianne Bersea Invite card

The watercolour study is a powerful artistic tool designed to capture the essence of our inspiration, quickly and effectively, either as finished works in their own right or as a resource for future paintings.  Artist Dianne Bersea has found this a favourite way to work.  "I love the focus of the study.  It gets me into the creative process immediately without allowing room for immobilizing expectations.  I can take the study as far as I want or use it as a departure point for more developed studio paintings.  Watercolour is ideal for this purpose, and I often bring watercolour crayons into the mix to keep me loose and bold."

Specifically this workshop will assist artists in using watercolour media to - get dynamic, strong images onto the paper quickly and effectively - make the most of watercolour's spontaneous qualities - identify unexpected subject matter - simplify the visual environment - consider unique compositional options.

Dianne will also address working from photographs to take them beyond the surface reality of the image. Some additional water media sketching tools will be provided in the workshop

DAILY SCHEDULE: In a vigorous atmosphere of demos and hands-on, participants will create quick, loose sketches (en plein air if possible), in watercolour while keeping in mind further development in the studio. With surprising efficiency Dianne will show how to see more clearly and identify the elements that can be used to build strong watercolour images. From simple line, tone and form notations, remarkable images can be built. From our studies and with Dianne’s guidance, participants will create a series of smaller works to explore composition, impact, energy flow and colour options. Each day concludes with a gallery and discussion of working progress.

Dianne is a supportive, knowledgeable and entertaining workshop facilitator with an informal style. She quickly adapts to varying levels of ability and encourages a positive outlook. Demonstrations are clear and progressive and delivered with Dianne’s trademark flair and humour.

LEVEL: Some drawing or watercolour experience recommended for this workshop. Some experience in watercolour is reccommended, but artists of all levels from experienced beginners upward will find this class of benefit.

WORKSHOP: Friday October 22nd, Saturday October 23rd & Sunday October 24th, 2010 9am - 4pm.
PRICE: $325
